I am selling a domain or website to a new person, what are my options?

it's exciting to have a website or domain that is purchased by another party.  In this article we will discuss your options to deliver the domain and the files to the new owner.

There are 2 parts to a website, a domain name, and the files/databases that make the website work.  In this article, we will assume that you will be selling both the domain name and the hosting files to a third party.

1.) Working out the details of the sale.
We are not lawyers here at Insty.me, so we can't provide any sales, batering or legal information on the sale of your site.  Please be sure to check with any local laws before completing the sale of a site to ensure that it's done correctly.

When finalizing the sale of your site, you will want to discuss how the new owner would like to receive the files of your site.  Normally, the owner will want the files and database dumps in an archive file.

2.) Packaging up the files for your site.
If you have a wordpress site, you can easily package up your site using a plugin like wp-clone, or backupbuddy.  You can download these in the wordpress plugin repository, and take a full backup of the site and databases from right inside the admin section.

If the site is a standard HTML site, you can use the file manager inside your cPanel to create a zip archive of the files inside your site.

If you have any questions or need assistance with packaing up your site, we would be glad to help.  Just shoot us a message in the help center with the details.

3.) Transferring the domain
Domain transfers work by telling the registrar that you would like to transfer your domain from the current registrar, to another.  Usually, to do this, you would get a special code (normally called an EPP code) from your current registrar and give it to the new owner.  This code essentially is your 'deed' to the domain, and when you give that code away, you are giving permission for that new registrar to pull the domain from your registrar and set it up under their account.  Normally this process takes anywhere from 4-8 days.

If you purchased your domain name from Insty.me, just shoot us a message in the help center and we can generate your EPP code for you.  Any code generated from us would be sent to the email on file on your domain registration.

4.) If the new owner needs hosting
If the buyer of your website needs hosting, then you can always recommend Insty.me!  As a new website customer, we would be glad to handle the transfer of the site from your account, to the new owner at no charge to the customer.  We can also transfer the domain into their account without any charges as well. This way, they can essentially 'assume' the contract that you have on the domain and not have to pay for a transfer fee to a new domain registrar.
